The Luckman Fine Arts Complex on the
campus of Cal State L.A. will present the Luckman Jazz Orchestra on
Saturday, March 21, 8:00 p.m., celebrating the work jazz legend John
Coltrane.
John Coltrane is recognized as a legendary
master of jazz with musical creativity and genius that has penetrated
all genres of music today. Having pioneered the free jazz movement,
Coltrane is celebrated for his precision and improvisation- considered
by many to be the best in the history of jazz. The Luckman Jazz Orchestra
and conductor Charles Owens continue a season-long series of tributes
to legends of jazz with this one night event.
Coltrane’s career was prolific in not
only his output of recordings, but also in the quality of each piece
he produced, nearly every one of them becoming an instant jazz classic.
An undeniably formative figure in American history- and music history
in general- John Coltrane has become synonymous with anything and everything
jazz, launching this uniquely American art form onto the world stage.
In existence since 2001, the Luckman
Jazz Orchestra boasts some of the finest professional jazz musicians
in Los Angeles. Musicians scheduled to perform on March 21st are
Charles Owens, conductor, tenor and soprano saxophone; Lanny
Hartley, piano; Alphonse Mouzon, drums; Trevor Ware,
bass; Alberto Salas, percussion; Winston Byrd, first trumpet;
Jumaane Smith, second trumpet; James Ford, third trumpet;
Dr. Bobby Rodriguez, fourth trumpet; Brian Swartz, fifth
trumpet; George McMullen, first trombone; Jacques Voyemant,
second trombone;
Phil Ranelin, third trombone;
William Roper, Tuba; Lee Secard, alto saxophone; Dereck
McLyn, second alto saxophone; Bennie Maupin, first tenor
saxophone; Fred Jackson, second tenor saxophone; Jack Nimitz,
baritone saxophone; and special guest bassist James Leary.
