Thousand Oaks, CA James Tormé, Jazz singer and the youngest
son of the late legendary Jazz great, Mel Tormé, will make his orchestral
debut with the New West Symphony in a program celebrating The Best of West
Coast Jazz on Friday, July 6, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. in the Fred Kavli Theatre in
the Countrywide Performing Arts Center at Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza,
2100 East Thousand Oaks Boulevard, Thousand Oaks, CA. This fundraising
program for the symphony will feature the 50th Anniversary Performance of
newly orchestrated excerpts from Mel Tormé¹s ³California Suite² recorded in
March 1957. This performance represents the first Jazz concert presented in
New West Symphony¹s history.
³California Suite,² a musical homage to The Great Golden State,
was composed by Mel Tormé and arranged by Marty Paich. As a tribute,
excerpts from ³California Suite² will be performed in this concert by their
sons, James Tormé and David Paich. Under the baton of Grammy and Emmy
Award-winning composer and arranger, David Paich, ³California Suite,² will
be performed by the New West Symphony and lead singer, James Tormé, along
with a specially assembled Vocal Quartet comprised of Katie Campbell,
Soprano; Sandy Howell, Alto; Fletcher Sheridan, Tenor and Eric Bradley,
Bass-Baritone. James Tormé¹s sister, Radio and Television Personality,
Daisy Tormé, will also make a Special Appearance.
The program will also feature symphonic Jazz standards
popularized by Mel Tormé performed by James Tormé and His Trio, featuring
Brandon Coleman on Piano, Gene Coy on Drums and Ryan Cross on Bass, along
with Guest Trumpeter, John Daversa. Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning jazz
great, John Altman, will serve as Conductor for this part of the program.
