Revered
by fans and critics alike for the pristine beauty and infinite vision of his
music, saxophonist Charles Lloyd has continually shown jazz new vistas. Three months before avant-garde drumming pioneer Billy
Higgins died in May of 2001, he and Lloyd, a long-time friend, spent a week
recording together at Lloyd's home. This final intimate musical conversation is
captured on the ECM Records' “Which
Way Is East” and in “Home” a documentary film by Dorothy
Darr. The UCLA Live world premiere event combines video and live performance to celebrate the life
and spirit of Higgins. Following a screening
of an excerpt from “Home,”
Lloyd will play with tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain and hot Houston drummer Eric Harland.
Internationally acclaimed pianist Geri Allen, bassist Reuben Rogers, and special
guests will later join the trio. “The
partnership of [Charles] Lloyd and the late drummer Billy Higgins was one of
jazz's magical associations,” wrote the Los Angeles Times.
