Steve Wilson at the Jazz Bakery!
by jazzcat on Jul.12, 2004, under News
Sunday night in LA.
The crowd has thinned out from the great turnout on Friday and Saturday
night here at the Jazz Bakery to see Steve Wilson and his Quartet. This
is one of the only times that I have seen this great horn player here
on the scene in Los Angeles. My first encounter with Steve was in NYC
at a place called Sweet Basil. Tonight, he had some of LA’s finest
playing right by his side. Mr. Alan Pasqua on Piano, my man Marvin
“Smitty” Smith on Drums and Bass player Ed Howard, (not from LA but,
outstanding none the less).
Steve did a few tunes
from his latest disc on the Maxjazz label called, ”Soulful Song”. The
disc features some soulful singers singing some of these soulful songs
as well. Rene Marie, Carla Cook and Phillip Manuel, all great singer
and all with albums on the Maxjazz label. The new disc features a
number of todays great players like Bruce Barth, Billy Kilson, Paul
Bollenback and more.
“You’re Everything”
is a tune that I believe was written by Chick Corea and done so
wonderfully on Flute. From Flute to Alto to Soprano, Steve Wilson
displays his fine talents as a leader as he has done on numerous discs
before. With his outstanding reputation as one of today’s in demand
horn players and the caliber of the Maxjazz record label, you will
certainly be hearing much more from Steve Wilson. Old friend and
outstanding Violinist Karen Briggs dropped by to check out her old friend Steve do his thing!
Maxjazz is run by a
cat named Richard, who has one of the best smiles in the business. It
is a label whose taste in musicians is paralleled with its fine taste
presentation. Check out Maxjazz and make sure to pick up “Soulful Songs” as well!
