Master Trombonist, Phil Ranelin, has a long history of paying tribute to those musicians who have impacted his own music.  His 1996 recording, A CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF THE VERY BEST KIND, included selections honoring Miles Davis, J.J. Johnson, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson and Charlie Parker.   He also produced a series of performances celebrating Freddie Hubbards 60th Birthday at the Vision Theatre, the centennial years of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, J.J. Johnson with a Phil Ranelin 5-trombone tribute for the International Association for Jazz Educations Convention in Long Beach, and the 75th memorial birthdays of John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy and Hampton Hawes.  The latter two were part of a rich year-long Ranelin series in tribute to late unsung Los Angeles trailblazers who impacted the international Jazz community.  Horace Tapscott, Melba Liston, Dexter Gordon, Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy and Hampton Hawes have all been honored by Phil Ranelin Jazz Ensemble performances.  On January 15, 2004, Ranelins 9-month collaboration with Build Crenshaw Arts and Councilmember Bernard Parks successfully culminated in the naming of the 5-million dollar building at Denker Recreation Center after Eric Dolphy; and Ranelins 2004 African American History Month performance in tribute to Hampton Hawes resulted in Mayor Hahn and the City Council signing a resolution designating November 13th as Hampton Hawes Day throughout the City of Los Angeles, henceforth!  Therefore, on the occasion of Ranelins own 65th birthday (Born:  May 25, 1939) the Jazz community, friends and family will come together to let Phil Ranelin know how much they appreciate him, his music and his commitment to honoring those Jazz warriors of the past for future generations to know and appreciate.  The public is invited to join the celebration and wish the gentle giant with the turned-up trombone a Happy Birthday!
