Omar Sosa Quartet with special guest Will Power

“Roots Trilogy Reunion Concert”

Saturday, Oct. 22 at 8 p.m.; Royce Hall

Drawing from a musical gene pool of global styles—from world beat rhythms and Latin jazz to bebop and urban hip-hop—the sophisticated and thrilling music of Cuban pianist Omar Sosa is truly the future sound of jazz. Eight years ago Sosa collaborated with Will Power, the dynamic young actor, rapper and modern-day griot, in a trilogy of groundbreaking recordings that fused Afro-Cuban elements with Latin jazz and hip-hop. In this very unique event, Power and Sosa reunite in celebration of those early recordings.

Marcus Miller

Lalah Hathaway

Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 8 p.m., Royce Hall

With his “supercharged, volcanic and mind blowing” bass-playing [NPR], Marcus Miller has earned great acclaim for his solo albums and as a standout session player with the likes of Miles Davis, David Sanborn, George Benson, Chaka Khan and many others. Following the success of his 2001 Grammy-winning album “M2” and his recent release “Silver Rain,” Miller makes his UCLA Live debut in a double bill with the beguiling and versatile R&B songstress Lalah Hathaway. Daughter of the great Donny Hathaway, Lalah’s talent, poise and confidence have been commanding attention since her debut recording in 1990.

Billie & Me:

Dianne Reeves, Fontella Bass, Rokia Traoré, Terri Lyne Carrington, Joan Osborne and Nancy Wilson (narration)

Friday, Oct. 28 at 8 p.m., Royce Hall

This extraordinary lineup of women musicians celebrates Billie Holiday, one of the most influential figures in music and a 20th century icon. Live performances, readings and interpretations of Lady Day’s repertoire combine with a tapestry of stories told through film and audio footage, taking audiences on a journey from her humble beginnings to life on the road and as a solo artist.

Ahmad Jamal

Sunday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m., Royce Hall

A bona fide legend whose rhythmic innovations, gorgeous harmonies and groundbreaking use of space and silence, tension and release, have inspired instrumentalists from Miles Davis to Keith Jarrett, pianist Ahmad Jamal remains a powerful creative force in jazz music and one of the most exciting keyboard artists alive.

Alice Coltrane

Dwight Trible Quintet

Saturday, Feb. 18 at 8 p.m., Royce Hall

Lauded as a great instrumentalist and bandleader in her own right, the pianist and widow of the late jazz master John Coltrane recently released her first album in 26 years. Continuing her husband’s investigations of Eastern and Indian music, the “Translinear Light” recording showcases the “undiminished brio that Coltrane brings to the keyboard” particularly her ethereal Wurlitzer organ and synthesizer playing. A truly unexpected album” [The New Yorker].  Coltrane makes her much anticipated return to the stage at UCLA Live with the world premiere of songs from her new album. Local vocal talent Dwight Trible and his group will open.
