Slide Show

Mark Maxwell is one of the few cats left on radio that really spins the creativity when it comes to jazz music. He is a program host on radio station KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles and streaming on the web at KPFK.ORG. The show is called “RISE” which he does live on Sunday nights from 11pm to 2am. It is full of rich, extreme, Avant Guard, Bop, Straight Ahead and some of the coolest obscure cuts of jazz music that you will ever hear played on the air. Unlike our other jazz station in this town that is flowing like water along the curb straight out to sea, you will be amused and engaged in the selection of the music.

Well on Wednesday night, Mr. Maxwell celebrated his birthday at a place in Santa Monica called Zanzibar. It is a sister club to the Temple Bar and the Little Temple where all kinds of music is played to bring you to your feet and dance. Although we know Mark as a great jazz program host, he is also a DJ here at Zanzibar every Wednesday night with his associate Sergio Mielniczenko, also from KPFK, who is the host of the "Global Village" show on Fridays from 10am-12pm. On Wednesday night at Zanzibar, Mark, Sergio and Big B spin batucada, salsa, rumba, raga, funk, jazz, and soulful electronica. If you are looking for eclectic alternatives for entertainment then this is the place for you.

A couple of other folks from the station, Jerry Quickly and Maggie LePique also came out to celebrate the Max and his birthday.  Zanzibar is a nice place to get a drink, relax on the comfortable couches, or get down to the sounds of Brazilian and other global groves.

Mark has once again invited me back to do another jazz duo show on Rise. I will be sure to let you know so you can tune in and catch Mark and me back in action.

Until the next time.

Peace!
